
Snyder, TX - Western Texas defeated the Cisco Wranglers on Wednesday night in four sets, 19-25, 25-23, 25-23, 25-20.
The Lady Westerners volleyball squad entered Tuesday's matchup with a 5-7 record. Western Texas opened the 2024 season with the WTC Fall Classic. The team won all four of four of their appearances with three set sweeps. Western Texas would lose their footing over the course of two road trip tournaments. The Westerners won one matchup at the Wrangler Ranger Round Up and dropped all four games at the NCTC Tournament in Gainesville.
However, Western Texas regained momentum on Wednesday with a big come from behind victory against the Cisco Wranglers. Cisco opened the match with five unanswered points in the first set that pushed Western Texas into a timeout. The Westerners collected themselves and battled back in the first set. Though the team stated ten kills in the first set, Western Texas fell to Cisco 19-25 in the first set.
The Lady Westerners came out with a great response in the second set as both sides exchanged strikes. The two teams went dig for dig, kill for kill and battled at the net the entire set. As 25 points neared for both squads, the home team managed to separate and tie the matchup at a set apiece, 25-23. The third set was just as competitive as the second with an identical score. Western Texas again bested the Wranglers late to pull away with a set lead, 25-23.
Western Texas closed out the victory with a five point match victory in the fourth set, 25-20. Anastasija Andjelic and Akyra Levassar lead the team in kills with ten apiece and both had 35 total attacks. Andjelic also recorded the most service aces for her side with two and 17 digs. Zenaida Murillo had a successful day as she led the team in assists with 16 and recorded 13 digs. The team effort win earned the Lady Westerners sixth victory of the season.
UP NEXT: Western Texas will be on the road for the Amarillo College Tournament for four games. Their first appearance will be against Frank Phillips on Friday, September 13th.
