Montgomery and Duncan To Continue Careers

Two Western Texas College track and field athletes will continue their careers at four-year schools.

Victor Montgomery, who will receive his associate's degree in December, signed with NCAA Division II University of Montevallo. Montgomery will join the Montevallo program in January.

Britaney Duncan signed with Florida International University, a NCAA Division I school that competes in Conference USA. Duncan will graduate in May from WTC.

"Victor and Britaney have been good examples on and away from the track for their teammates," WTC head coach James Williams said. "A lot of schools recruited them. Britaney's performance during her freshman season got the scholarship offer. We will have Britaney for one more season and I expect her to do well."

Williams said he's happy that Montgomery received an offer. "I'm glad Victor will get back closer to home, but we will miss him at WTC," Williams said. "I know that was important to him."

Montgomery qualified for the 2016 National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) outdoor meet in the 110-meter hurdles. He was a qualifier in the 60-meter hurdles at the NJCAA indoor meet.

"It's close to home and I was trying to get back there," Montgomery said. "All of the coaches at WTC have been great to me. I have enjoyed my time here."

Montgomery expects to compete in the 400-meter dash and 400-meter hurdles for Montevallo and possibly run a leg on the 1600-meter relay."The Montevallo coach told me I could run on the 1600-meter relay," Montgomery said. "My goal will be to lower my times in all events."

Duncan said she decided that FIU would be the best fit."I felt comfortable on my visit," Duncan said. "It will help to make the decision now, so I can concentrate on next season."Duncan finished third in the 400-meter hurdles at the 2016 NJCAA outdoor meet. At the national indoor meet, she was sixth in the 600-meter and ran on the WTC 1600-meter relay team that finished fifth."It has been a good experience at WTC," Duncan said. "I appreciate the climate on campus and the community. I would love to win the indoor and outdoor titles in my final season. The 400-meter dash is not my strongest event. My event is the 400-meter hurdles."
