Jamaican quarter-miler Satanya Wright opened her season with a personal best and a win at the Ted Nelson Invitational inside the Texas A&M-Gilliam Indoor Track Stadium on Friday.

The Western Texas College sophomore topped a field that included several NCAA Division One athletes. She easily won section 11 of the women 400 meters in 56.36 ahead of Texas Southern University's Haroon, Nikole (57.11).

The mark was comfortably the fastest on the day, ahead of Sam Houston State University's Payton Wells (56.75).

The mark surpasses her previous best of 56.69 and sits atop the NJCAA rankings.

The former St. Elizabeth Technical standout had a strong freshman season last year, winning silver in the 600m at the NJCAA Indoor Championships and finishing just outside of the medals in the 400m finishing 4th at the Outdoor Championships
