Region V Cross Country Championships

Cross Country Teams

This weekend the Westerners Cross Country teams traveled to Levelland, Texas for the Region V Cross Country Championships. The team was able to race on this course three weeks ago so all of the athletes were confident in knowing the key points on the course. The weather was 45 degrees for the women and 50 degrees for the men. We could not ask for better cross country weather and the times showed it.

The ladies raced first and Jackline Kwambai led the team with a 13th place finish. Jackline was 3 places away from qualifying for nationals as an individual. Nicole Penick and Mikaylee Gwin came in 20th and 21st. These three ladies did a great job this season of working together. We had some tough luck this season on the lady's side with injuries, but these ladies still improved despite the situation. They have laid the foundation for us to have something to build off of for next year, with all three returning for next year.

The men finished off the day by having Jesse Ortiz lead them to the finish line, he placed 9th today which clinched his ticket to Nationals as an Individual. Andrew Rueda and Alberto Bejarano came in close behind Jesse with a 12th and 13th finish. We went with a different strategy this weekend compared to what we did a few weeks ago and it paid off. All of these guys were competing for each spot from our first guy to our last guy. It was a really exciting team race to watch. The difference maker this weekend with our team, was our 5th man Ethan Fernandez stepping up and closing the gap between him and our top 4 guys.
