Coach Andre Owens enters his third season as Head Coach looking to build off of an exciting first two seasons.  In Coach Owens’ first year as Head Coach, The Westerners finished 22-10 with a runner-up finish at the Region V tournament. Owens has had 3 NJCAA Academic All Americans, 6 players earning All-Conference Honors, and 8 players sign to play Division 1 basketball in his first two seasons. 

Owens came to WTC from Oklahoma City University where he was an assistant coach from 2012-2015. While there, his responsibilities were recruiting, player development, practice planning, film breakdown, scouting, strength and conditioning program, and fundraising. He coached several athletes who earned honors; 8 All-Conference honors, 4 Academic All-Conference honors, 3 NAIA All-Americans, and 4 athletes who continued their career playing professional basketball overseas. In 2012 they won the SAC conference tournament advancing to the national tournament. In 2014 they finished second in the conference and got an automatic bid to the national tournament.  Owens was a volunteer coach at Eastfield Community College from 2010-2012 where they were 37-20 and advanced to Conference championship both seasons.

Owens began his college career at McLennan in 2002. In his two years the team advanced to the Regional semifinals both seasons and he earned 1st team all-conference in his sophomore season. After McLennan, Owens went to University Texas at San Antonio where he was a two-year starter.  Owens averaged 18 points and 6 rebounds earning 2nd team all-conference and also earned Strength and Conditioning All American.  He went to play professionally in Germany and Turkey for two years and then played in the Continental Basketball Association for one year.

Owens attended Irving High School and was district 7-5A Offensive player of the year. He also earned All Area and All State honors while being ranked Top 40 in the state of Texas and a McDonald’s All American nominee.

Owens is a native of Irving, Texas. He graduated from Irving High School in 2002. Owens earned his bachelor’s degree in Kinesiology at the University of Texas-San Antonio in 2007. 

While at WTC Coach Owens is responsible for assisting in all areas of the program including recruiting, scheduling, player development, opponent scouting, travel and academic advising. His playing career will help him relate to the athletes in the program. He is a person of great basketball knowledge and coaching abilities.
