Prior to being named as head coach in May 2021, Gary Miller joined the Western Texas College baseball staff in June 2017 as an Assistant Coach where he worked primarily with the hitters and catchers in addition to his recruiting duties.

Before coming to WTC Miller spent three seasons at Sam Houston under Matt Deggs. During that span, the Bearkats captured three Southland Conference regular-season titles and qualified for the NCAA Tournament in 2016 and 2017.

Sam Houston State enjoyed a Division I program-record 44-win season in 2017 to advance to its first-ever NCAA Super Regional. The 2017 squad finished nationally ranked in all six polls, checking in at No. 14 (Collegiate Baseball), No. 16 (NCBWA), No. 18 (D1 Baseball), No. 19 (USA Today Coaches), No. 20 (Baseball America) and No. 22 (Perfect Game).

The Bearkats stormed through the Southland Conference Tournament with four consecutive wins to captured the crown and earn the automatic berth to the NCAA Tournament. In the Lubbock Regional, the team won three straight elimination games in a 24-hour span to upset No. 5 Texas Tech twice and won both of its games against 16th-ranked Arizona to claim the Lubbock regional.

In the process, the Kats became the first Southland Conference program to ever advance out of the regional round of the NCAA Tournament and traveled to Tallahassee, Fla., where it met Florida State in the Super Regionals.

In 2016, the Bearkats swept the Southland regular-season and Tournament titles to earn a spot in the NCAA Tournament. Sam Houston State, which welcomed 19 freshmen and 29 newcomers, went 42-22 overall and posted a 24-6 mark in conference play.

In 2015, Sam Houston State won 31 games and made it to the championship game of the Southland Tournament.

In Miller’s three years at Sam Houston, the Major League Baseball Draft selected nine Sam Houston players. The three players drafted in 2017 included Bryce Johnson who went to the San Francisco Giants in the sixth round.

Miller’s passion for baseball reaches back more than 30 years. His understanding of the various hitting and infield techniques and his ability to effectively communicate with players of all ages and ability levels leads to a high success rate in those who train hard. His knowledge and ongoing research in biomechanics, mental/emotional training, and “vision mechanics” is outstanding and has produced proven results.

Miller, a native of Texas City, Texas, has been married to his wife Elizabeth for over 30 years and together they have three wonderful children: Lauren Miller Thrash, Macie Miller, and Garrett Miller.
