Western Texas College didn’t have to look far when the administration needed a new athletic director in the spring of 2011. Leadership came from within the department with the naming of Tammy Davis. Davis had been the Lady Westerner basketball coach since 2006.

Davis heads the largest community college athletic program in the state of Texas with 15 teams. She broke ground by becoming the only female Athletic Director in NJCAA Region Five. The Region Five Conference encompasses parts of Texas and New Mexico.

A native of Bloomfield, New Mexico, Davis played basketball at Bloomfield High School, starting all four years. She lead her team to the state Class 3-A tournament twice. Davis also received All-District and All-State honors three years. She continued her playing career at the collegiate level making stops at New Mexico Junior College and UNM before landing at Texas Tech where she completed her bachelor’s degree in science.

Davis feels blessed to have played for the legendary Texas Tech Lady Raider Coach Marsha Sharp, a mentor who has remained a close advisor over the years.

Following her playing days, Davis was a student assistant for Sharp while finishing her bachelor’s degree in physical education. She graduated from Texas Tech in 1990 and was hired as an assistant coach at Northern Arizona University from 1990-92. Davis also has extensive high school coaching experience from serving as the head coach at her alma mater and at Farmington High School in New Mexico. Her 2001 Bloomfield team finished third in the state tournament and her 2003 Farmington team was state runner-up.

Western Texas College hired Davis to re-establish a dormant program in 2006. Her 2007-08 team advanced to the semi-final round of the regional basketball tournament. Her WTC teams were recognized for academic excellence by the NJCAA and WBCA.

Every Lady Westerner basketball player who stayed on Davis’ team for two years earned a degree from WTC. Many of her players earned scholarship help to further pursue their educations and careers at four-year institutions.

Davis remains committed to excellence as she oversees the athletic department. She believes that each program should not only better their student athletes in the playing arena, but also in the classroom and in their personal lives. WTC is an athlete-rich community which gives its members the opportunity to be surrounded by others who have the same goals.WTC provides a great atmosphere to be encircled by others who are willing to put the benefit of the whole before the benefit of self. The coaching staff is second to none, and each staff member takes great pride in the work they do on a daily basis. Davis and her staff understand the significance of a coach’s role in touching the lives of the student athletes, and find great enjoyment in watching each athlete grow and develop.
